When Bethany Castiller and her family went to a local shelter to adopt a puppy, Mako made it obvious that he would be the one to accompany them.
“We joke that he picked us, not us him,” Castiller told The Dodo. “When we got to the rescue shelter, he had his back against the cage, so we started caressing him, and he glanced over his shoulder and made direct eye contact with us, and we just fell in love with the little boy,” she says.

The family had hoped to adopt a dog that would get along with their two cats, Pecan and Gizmo. The shelter informed them that Mako gets along well with cats — which they immediately learned was probably because Mako believes he’s a cat.
Though they can’t be certain, everyone believes Mako was raised with cats because all of his favorite hobbies are traditional cat activities. He doesn’t bark, he like cat snacks, and he enjoys sitting on top of counters and cabinets, much like his feline brothers.

When his family first noticed Mako climbing on top of tables and countertops, they thought it was strange — but soon realized that it’s simply who Mako is, and that they’d practically gotten another cat instead of a dog.

“We went online and got a dog toy that resembles a cat toy, so we go to the backyard and he chases and leaps after it like the cats,” Castiller explained. “He also enjoys lying on the tables with my cats and watching the birds out the window with them.” He comes over and performs the same thing when he sees one of my cats lying on their backs for a tummy rub!”

Mako is enamored with his cat siblings and spends as much time as he can with them, and his family couldn’t help but giggle everytime they walk into the room and discover Mako on top of anything right beside the cats, just one of the group.
“Whenever Mako sees the boys on the countertops or in the cabinets, he jumps up to join them,” Castiller explained. “All he wants to do is be around the kitties all the time.” If he’s not with one of us humans, he’s with the cats.”

Mako is unmistakably different and will always prefer cat activities to dog ones — and his family wouldn’t have it any other way.
