Sheryl Smith is an animal rescuer who has been providing foster care and transferring animals for many years, offering those animals that have been abandoned by others a second shot at happiness.
When Sheryl learned about Shiro, a deaf and partially blind dog who had already been in two shelters and roughly 12 foster homes, as well as being adopted and returned to the shelters four times, she felt she had to assist him.
He was a nervous dog, but Sheryl determined right away that he would become a member of her family so that Shiro could finally experience what it is like to have a lifelong home.

Everyone else had already given up, and Shiro’s adoptive mother, Sheryl, admits, “we weren’t prepared to do it too.”

She stated to The Dodo:
“He still screams in the car because he believes he was abandoned someplace else.”

Shiro is still in the fight, but he’s gone a long way since his family first met him.

This wonderful dog had a sympathetic spot for other animals in need, and he began to console all the other rescued animals passing by his house the moment he joined his family.

Shiro instantly joined the puppies and began cleaning them up when Sheryl rescued him.

She stated:
“He’s done that with every rescue he’s gotten. He basically sits with the wild cats/kittens and connects with them so well that they trust him before they trust me.”

Shiro went out to locate her and took her in after Sheryl acquired a young wild kitten named ‘Tiny Tolley’ who was extremely unwell.

Sheryl couldn’t believe how weak and unwell the tiny kitty was and immediately began attempting to care for her in order to restore her health. Shiro could see she wouldn’t have made it if she had been left alone for an extended period of time.

Sheryl stated:
“Shiro never stepped out of her cage. He knew she was sick and afraid and that she wanted to be consoled.”
Shiro refused to leave the young girl’s side even as she gradually regained her strength.

Tiny Tolley is becoming stronger by the day, and as soon as she is entirely well, Sheryl will look for a permanent home for herself, while Shiro will continue to soothe all the rescued animals in the way that only he knows how.

Sheryl added:
“His love and compassion for the others rescued is amazing.”
