Two-Legged Dalmatian Finds Best Home After Being Rescued

After going through a lot of hardship in the dog meat trade, a Dalmatian dog with only two legs was able to find a happy ending. ‘Emma Roo,’ the puppy, was saved from a local butcher in Xi’An, China, when she was around 8 weeks old.

When they discovered her, it was clear that she had been severely abused, since she lacked her front legs, the tip of her ears had been cut, and a portion of her tail had been amputated.

Emma was saved in time and sent to a veterinary facility in Beijing, where she was given the treatment she needed to recuperate.

Doctors discovered that the tiny girl had a deformity in her rear limb and was missing a couple of fingers after inspecting her, leading them to conclude that she was headed for the slaughterhouse.

Apparently, dog meat traffickers think that chopping off the limbs of animals that will be sold without anesthesia creates adrenaline. According to them, this ingredient softens the flesh of the mistreated animal, providing buyers with a better product.

Little Emma was placed in a foster family, but she was returned to the clinic exactly two years later.

In order for Emma to enjoy a better life, the rescuers sought the assistance of Dalmatian Rescue, a non-profit organization in South Florida, United States.

Emma arrived in the United States, just as the country stopped animal exports due to Covid-19. While she remained on the grounds of the charity, volunteers decided to post her story on social media in hopes to find her a home.

Misha Rackcliff Hunt, a 27-year-old lady, viewed the ad online and fell fully in love with Emma and wanted to assist her. So she decided to adopt the three-year-old puppy and bring her to her Charleston, South Carolina home.

According to Misha, who spoke to the Daily Mail:

“We know they were inflicted by people because of the type of their wounds. This appears to be frequent with ‘rare’ breeds that are dismembered and tortured.”

Despite Emma’s issues, Misha does her hardest to make her feel better and live a regular life. But she still has numerous psychological issues as a result of all the horror and abuse she endured in that dreadful location.

Misha stated:

“Emma is terrified of any noise that sounds like a chainsaw, including hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, and lawn mowers. She wailed every time I left the room when I initially brought her home. She was continually guarding her meals and toys. She even retained portions of my clothes at one point because she was afraid of having them taken off.”

Emma was wary of males, so Misha devised the plan to hire a male therapist to attempt to modify her behavior, and it succeeded.

Misha recalled the first time she spotted Emma on the Internet, and how she knew she was the one just by looking at her gorgeous eyes. She didn’t care about the paperwork she needed to complete in order to bring Emma home; all she wanted was to be her mother.

Misha stated:

“When I first met her, I assumed she’d be chilly or uninterested in others due to the trauma, yet she sprang right into my arms. When we arrived home after a five-hour journey, it was as though she knew I was her person and that I would never leave her.”

Misha and Dalmatian Rescue collaborated to raise funds for a personalized wheel cart in order to improve her quality of life.

Furthermore, Joey’s PAW, of which Emma became an ambassador, joined the cause and connected Misha with Derrick Campana of Bionic Pets, who provided her with custom-made prosthesis.

Emma’s recuperation is ongoing, and she still attends therapy and a weekly bath, but she is happier than she has ever been.

Emma used to be afraid of strangers and even hid her possessions, but today she enjoys making new friends and has over 10,000 Instagram followers.

Emma still has difficulty controlling her prosthesis and maneuvering her cart due to the way she carries her body, but treatments are helping. She has developed a lively personality, enjoys playing with the ball and her stuffed toys, and even socializes with other dogs at the park.

Misha helps fight this phenomenon by selling t-shirts that read “stand up for those who can’t” and donating all revenues. The money provided goes straight to various groups who are working hard to put an end to this horrific industry in China and throughout the world.

Misha stated:

“I strive to be an advocate for dogs of various abilities. People usually compliment me on how unselfish and unexpected I am, but it’s not that difficult. People assume you have to be a specific type of person, but I’m not. I’m just someone who feels that every dog, no matter what their circumstances, deserves a shot.”
